SCREENREADER

DBI as of August 21st 2026 has started adding screenreader support. This is a work in progress and suggestions and bug reports are much appreciated. You can access this through the 'screenreader' command (all one word). 'screenreader on' to start using it. Screenreader options lets you choose a few options for room descriptions, exits, prompts, and vnums. Additionally, with screenreader on certain commands will become much more plain text, such as score, who, and people using channels. The 'brief' command also includes some additional items that can reduce spam, and this list becomes more readable with the screen reader mode enabled. Particularly of note the brief +combatpl and brief +round. This will turn off the power level gains you see with each hit, and also condense rounds of combat into lines such as, Combat: You hit A Researcher 2 times for 3913 damage, missed 1 time. Our MUD works on a health system of 10,000 which is usually abbreviated with decimals like 26.07, however for readability the screenreader mode instead uses 2,607. Nothing changes with the math, just the display. The "on move" option for many screenreader options means it will not show them when you are just moving. For example room descriptions would only be seen when you explicitly type 'look'. This could be useful when you're moving about an area that is familiar to you already. The who list is condensed as well, and lists Admins as the first entry in case you need direct assistance with something. Channel text is shortened to be more readable, instead of using symbols for channel names. The screenreader also tries to remove "ASCII art" from room descriptions, but displays a brief message letting you know that this was removed. In the future I'd like to add additional room text that explains this ASCII art, but for the most part in our MUD this is all decoration and does not impact gameplay. config +idlebrief could be useful as well, since this reduces prompt spam
