RP RULES
Keywords: RPRULES
Roleplay as we do it here at DBI is an infinitely flexible,
ever-changing beast. Your character is not limited by a set array of
commands or options-what happens is entirely determined by you, the
players. This is our greatest strength, but it also means that we must
set guidelines, to ensure a fair, balanced experience for old and new
and to ensure that everybody enjoys themselves. These rules are to be
followed by everyone who uses the [CHAT] channel.
* Characters are not invulnerable, nor are they all-powerful. While the
tier system ensures a basic scale for which a character's power can be
measured, it is not a total guarantee. Nobody can dodge every attack
aimed at them or block every strike - you're going to take hits, even if
there's a power difference between you and your opponent. All characters
have limitations.
* Don't blow up the world. Players aren't allowed to smash major
landmarks, destroy cities, or blow up planets unless one of the RP
admins approves it. Minor destruction gets the point across without
severely unbalancing storylines or throwing plots into chaos - you don't
need to smash a continent every time you don't get your coffee in the
morning.
* Powers and weapons need to be treated with a certain amount of logic
past what the ability system lays out. Having a special weapon doesn't
make you a superman - you can still be beaten by a guy with his bare
hands, and you can't kill everyone you meet in one hit, even if you're
wielding the +7 Vampiric Flaming Vorpal Blade of Sharp Pointy Doom. And
just because you have a high-level energy blast doesn't mean that you
can automatically blow anyone lower tier than you into a humanoid scorch
mark on the ground. Be responsible and respectful with what you have.
* The guidelines and systems that have been laid out only go so far.
Pretty much everything is subject to agreement between the players in
the RP. Unforeseen circumstances, freak accidents, and lucky shots are
the spice that keep things interesting, and just because the guidelines
say that a level 5 barrier can stop a level 4 energy blast doesn't mean
that it has to, every single time. A well-described, clever maneuver can
(and should be able to) beat outright dominance at least part of the
time. This ALSO doesn't mean that a weaker character automatically has
an equal shot at winning - just because you aren't completely out of the
fight doesn't mean you don't have a disadvantage.
* Keep things DB-related. Including references and nods to other
settings is fine - especially if you keep it subtle - but at the same
time, your abilities, characters, and storylines need to keep a certain
amount of adherence to the setting. You are encouraged to be unique, but
you are also highly encouraged to discuss new things or ideas with the
RP admins to keep things from getting too silly.
* Don't whine. Things happen to characters. On the one hand, we tend to
look poorly on experienced roleplayers who go around causing trouble for
newbies, but on the other, if something happens to you, it's happened.
If you pick a fight with someone twenty times your strength and they
beat you, well, they earned that strength. If someone does something you
don't like, there is a complaints process set up - but if your complaint
gets rejected, or if it doesn't get settled to your liking, tough -
nobody wins every time. In the past [CHAT:OOC] was a flame war waiting
to happen, with several of the RPers having short tempers and extremely
defensive natures. Starting up a loud, pointless argument is the fastest
way to get deauthed, it irritates everybody, and it makes the RP admins
less likely to listen to you in the future. Don't do it.
* Let us handle arguments. If you have some disagreement and can't come
to an arrangement, then just suck it up, compromise, and soldier on, or
pause the RP. If there's an RP admin on, then get him. If the RP admin
can't help you, or if you can't reach him (some of us do idle a lot in
case we're needed), or if there's not one on, shoot a gnote to Admin.
NOTE, you CANNOT use another character to RP on behalf of another one of
your characters.
